Co-developing the prototype

Insights

At 40 monitoring stations for river and rainfall levels, we trained and supported Gauge Readers & Observers, as well as government staff in how to use an early prototype.

After extensive testing & learning, a technology based on SMS was rolled out to enable near real-time transmission of observations.

On a daily basis, data was sent by Gauge Readers & Observers online using SMS, and where observations were available for instant analysis & download.

The prototype's value was evident in rapid deployment, high level of observations and capturing information on important events, such as the extreme rainfall of Cyclone Ana in January 2022.
